LUMBER, as has been mentioned, refers to the walk of a bear. Bear-walk is essentially very clumsy. When someone LUMBERS he\she walks with slow, heavy and clumsy steps. LUMBERING is exactly antithetical to CATWALK, which is very AGILE or NIMBLE (gracefully fast, flexible and skillful). When we move like a cat we are graceful in our steps. When we move like a bear we are awkward or clumsy in our steps.
Hence,
AGILE, NIMBLE x CLUMSY, AWKWARD, GAUCHE
An old analogy question in GRE was based on this idea.
LUMBER: GRACE
Lumber indicates a lack of grace.
just as
WAVER: RESOLVE
Waver (to be unsteady) indicates a lack of resolve (determination).
or just as
FLAG: VIM
Flag (to become weak) indicates a lack of vim (strength).
LUMBER is such a heavy and clumsy movement that it neatly contrasts with a light and graceful move like GLIDE.
LUMBER x GLIDE
We have seen that the way a peacock walks is called SWAGGERING or STRUTTING. We also know that the peacock is the symbol of pride. So, when someone walks with pride like a peacock we say he\she STRUTS or SWAGGERS.
STRUT (SWAGGER): WALK
To strut is to walk with pride
just as
BRAG (BOAST): TALK
To brag is to talk with pride.
Another association once they asked was as follows:
STRUT: PRIDE
Strut indicates pride
just as
EMBRACE: AFFECTION
Embrace indicates affection
The above types of analogies are very common in GRE. Here are a few of them:
BEAM: PLEASURE
Our beaming (smiling) indicates our pleasure.
RANT: INDIGNATION
Our ranting (speaking in anger) shows our indignation (anger).
CHORTLE: MIRTH
Our chortling (laughing) expresses our mirth (great joy)
PREEN: VANITY
Our preening or primping shows our vanity or self-satisfaction.
COWER: DREAD
Our cowering (drawing back in fear) indicates our dread (fear).
GROAN: GRIEF
Our groaning (crying) is a sign of our grief (sorrow)
WAVER: IRRESOLUTION
Our wavering indicates our irresolution (lack of will-power).
DEMUR: QUALMS
Our demurring or dithering (hesitation to act) shows our qualms (apprehensions).
GLOWER: WRATH
Wrath (anger) is indicated by glowering (staring in anger)
FUME: IRE
Our fuming is, again, a sign of our ire or anger
BLUSH: DISCOMFITURE
Our blushing indicates our embarrassment or discomfiture.
OBEISANCE: SURRENDER
Our obeisance is a mark of our surrender.
CRINGE: FEAR
Cringing (withdrawing in fear) indicates fear.
JEER: DERISION
Jeering indicates derision(contempt).
REPROACH: CENSURE
Reproaching(scolding) indicates our censure (criticism)
UPBRAID:DISAPPROVAL
When we upbraid(scold) we indicate our disapproval.
In all the above pairs the first term expresses the emotion mentioned in the second.
