XLV: MATERIALS 'n' PRODUCTS
We had “HIDE” in the last post. Did you know that “HIDE” also refers to the SKIN of the animals? We make LEATHER from HIDE, just as we make FLOUR from GRAIN, or WINE from GRAPES, or FURNITURE from WOOD, or a WALL from BRICKS. These simple terms get featured in GRE ANALOGIES. More than testing the strength of our vocabulary, these analogies test your awareness of the everyday world. They appear either MATERIAL and PRODUCT relationship, or WORKER and MATERIAL, or PRODUCT and WORKER relationship. Let’s get a few of them in order.
WORKER: MATERIAL: PRODUCT
TANNER: HIDE: LEATHER
VINTNER (wine-maker): GRAPES: WINE
MASON: BRICK (stone): WALL
JOINER (carpenter): WOOD: FURNITURE
Look at some similar ANALOGIES that appeared earlier:
WORKER: PRODUCT
AUTHOR: BOOK
MASON: WALL
MATERIAL: PRODUCT
RUBBER: TIRE
WAX: CANDLE
FLAX: LINEN
CLAY: PORCELAIN
