CHAPTER X: LOVERS and HATERS

ANTIPATHY, the feeling of hatred, is the dominant trait of a HATER. We come across various kinds of HATERS at various places. Some men hate women. Some women hate men. Some hate foreigners. Some fear and therefore dislike animals. Some hate children. Some hate humankind in general. Below we have a few of these haters in the form of analogical pairs.

MISANTHROPE: HUMANITY.

XENOPHOBE: STRANGERS

MISOGYNIST: WOMEN

MISOGAMIST: MARRIAGE

A MISANTHROPE hates people, whereas a PHILANTHROPIST loves them.

MISANTHROPE x PHILANTHROPIST

MISANTHROPY x PHILANTHROPY

A PHILANTHROPIST loves humanity, just as a XENOPHILE loves foreigners. Hence, we can say

PHILANTHROPIST: HUMANITYs the same as

XENOPHILE: STRANGERS

Just as the dominant feeling of a MISANTHROPE is hatred, the dominant feeling of a PHILANTHROPIST is BENEVOLENCE (kindliness). Based on these connections, many analogies are built, wherein the second term of the pair denotes the dominant trait of the first.

PHILANTHROPIST: BENEVOLENCE

A philanthropist is a person of benevolence.

ALTRUIST: SELFLESSNESS

An altruist is a person of selflessness.

SAGE: WISDOM

A sage is a person of wisdom.

DOLT: STUPIDITY

A dolt(idiot) is a person of stupidity.

A misanthrope is a person of rancor(bitter feelings.)

DIPLOMAT: TACT

A diplomat is a person of tact(diplomacy.)

INVENTOR: INGENUITY.

An inventor is a person of ingenuity( inventive capacity.)
