XXII:CHAPTER XXIII: PROVERBS

PITHY, as has been seen is from PITH. PITHY is LACONIC, BRIEF. For example, a proverb is a pithy (brief) saying just as a saga(epic) is a lengthy expression. Hence,
SAGA: LENGTHY
is similar to
PROVERB: PITHY
Just as a PROVERB is A PITHY saying, an APHORISM, an EPIGRAM, an ADAGE, and a MAXIM are all PITHY sayings. Hence all the following are synonyms:
APHORISM
EPIGRAM
PROVERB
MAXIM
ADAGE

Because "APHORISM" or "EPIGRAM" is also a pithy saying, "APHORISTIC" means PITHY{BRIEF}; "EPIGRAMMATIC" also means BRIEF{PITHY}. Some times we get very uncomplicated analogies in which the two given words are the meaning of each other. For example,

APHORISTIC: TERSE {Aphoristic means terse(brief).} HYPERBOLIC: EXAGGERATED {Hyperbolic means exaggerated.}
