XXV:PERSONALITIES

In this post, let's look at some words that describe the varied types of PERSONALITIES who live around us. These words frequently appear in problems of ANALOGIES.

1. COQUETTE

A flirting girl.

A coquette PHILANDERS (flirts), just as a DILETTANTE [hobbyist] DABBLES [practices a a hobby.]

Hence,

COQUETTE: PHILANDER

DILETTANTE: DABBLE

2. CIRCE or SIREN

A tempting woman, a seductress.

A siren seduces or tempts, just as MEDUSA PETRIFIES [turn people to stone.]

{Incidentally, PETRIFY is the opposite of ELECTRIFY.}

PETRIFY x ELECTRIFY

SIREN: SEDUCE

is similar to

MEDUSA: PETRIFY

3.AMAZON

A beefy [muscular] woman.

An amazon is a sinewy (muscular) lady, just as an ADONIS is a personable [handsome] young man. Hence,

AMAZON: SINEWY

ADONIS: PERSONABLE.

SINEWY, BRAWNY, BEEFY, STURDY all mean physically strong.

SINEWY x WEAK

PERSONABLE, ENGAGING, PREPOSSESSING, HANDSOME, COMELY all mean attractive, pleasing to the eyes.

COMELY x HOMELY

HOMELY means PLAIN-LOOKING, not so attractive

COMELY: EYES

(Comely is pleasing to the eyes.)

is similar to

FRAGRANT: NOSE

(fragrant is pleasing to the nose.)

4. JUDAS

A Judas is a traitor, a disloyal person

A traitor betrays in the same way as a VIRAGO quarrels. A virago is a cantankerous (quarrelsome) woman. Hence,

VIRAGO: CANTANKEROUS

TRAITOR( Judas): PERFIDIOUS (disloyal)

PERFIDIOUS is from PERFIDY, disloyalty. TREACHERY, TREASON, BACKSTABBING, DEFECTION, BETRAYAL, PERFIDY all are similar in meaning.

PERFIDY x LOYALTY

PERFIDIOUS: LOYAL

(Perfidious lacks loyalty)

is similar to

EXORBITANT ( immoderate): MODERATION

(Exorbitant lacks moderation.)

When we cheat our nation, we becomeTRAITORS or RENEGADES;

when we cheat our faith or religion, we become APOSTATES;

when we cheat our principles or causes, we become DEFECTORS; and

when we cheat in our duty, we become DESERTERS.

RENEGADE: NATION APOSTATE: FAITH DEFECTOR: CAUSE DESERTER: DUTY

All the above pairs have the same relationship of disloyalty, and all those people can be termed RATS, as the rats are the symbols of treason, just as the dogs are the symbols of loyalty. Hence,

RAT: PERFIDY

DOG: FIDELITY.
