XLIV: EARTH 'n' WATER

Today, we’ll have a look at a harmless term, “HIDE.” Hide, as a verb we know, is to CONCEAL, the opposite of which can be DISCLOSE DIVULGE REVEAL EXPOSE DEBUNK (publicly expose) and UNEARTH Below are a few ANTONYM pairs that came earlier in GRE. DIVULGE x KEEP SECRET UNEARTH x CONCEAL DELUDE (mislead by hiding truth) x REVEAL (expose the truth) REVEAL is, in fact, to REMOVE the VEIL (the cover for the face) of the truth. {Incidentally, an ANALOGY was coined by the GRE makers with VEIL. Here it is: VEIL: FACE CURTAIN: STAGE. If our face is a stage, our veil is its curtain.} UNEARTH, the synonym of REVEAL, can also mean EXCAVATE, DIG OUT. When we dig out, we EXHUME. EXHUME comes from HUMUS, which refers to fertile mud. [ By the way, did you know that the word HUMAN also comes from HUMUS? According to the Christian Theology, God made the humans from humus on the sixth day of Creation. Hence, when we say that someone is human, it means that he /she is made of mud. It is not a compliment to be called a human after all!] The ANTONYM of EXHUME is INHUME, which means to BURY. BURY can also be termed INTER. INTER is from IN and TERRA (earth). When we INTER we keep something inside the terra, the earth. Look at the ANALOGY below: WATER: SUBMERGE EARTH: INTER When we submerge something we keep it in water; in the same way, when we inter something we keep it in the earth. From TERRA, we derive TERRESTRIAL, of the earth. Terrestrial life is life belonging to the earth, just as ARBOREAL animals are animals belonging to the trees. This is another common type of ANALOGY we find in the tests. One word will be the ADJECTIVE of the other. TREE: ARBOREAL EARTH: TERRESTRIAL SUN: SOLAR MOON: LUNAR STAR:SIDEREAL OCEAN: MARINE or NAUTICAL
