XVIII: TEARS

ELEGIAC, as we saw, refers to being sad, being in low spirits, exactly contrary to ECSTATIC, which is to be in high spirits, or greatly happy. Below we can see a few words which imply the idea of sadness and low spirits:
ELEGIAC
MOURNFUL
LAMENTING
PLAINTIVE
GRIEVING
LACHRYMOSE
LUGUBRIOUS
MELANCHOLIC
DEJECTED
DEPRESSED
When we mourn or lament we express our grief. An ELEGY 's function is to LAMENT, just as a PAEAN 's function is to LAUD, or, just as a PHILIPPIC's function is to LAMBASTE.
ELEGY: LAMENT
PAEAN: LAUD
PHILIPPIC: LAMBASTE
The term LACHRYMOSE in the above group means to be full of tears. Just as a VERBOSE person is full of words, a LACHRYMOSE person is full of tears, or a FLORID thing is full of EMBELLISHMENTS(beautification).
LACHRYMOSE:TEARS FLORID: EMBELLISHMENTS VERBOSE: WORDS
We shouldn't confuse LACHRYMOSE with LACHRYMAL. Lachrymal means producing tears, just as SUDORIFIC means producing sweat, or SOPORIFIC (sedative) is producing sleep,or CAUSTIC is producing corrosion, or ANALGESIC is producing insensitivity.
LACHRYMAL: TEARS
ANALGESIC: INSENSITIVITY
CAUSTIC: CORROSION
SOPORIFIC: SLEEP
This is,again, a common type of analogy we get in the test.
